DeerLab uses the time stamp stored within each photo (called Exif data or Exchangeable image file format) to provide additional weather information cameras can't capture. If for some reason, a photo does not have this information, DeerLab will let you know by displaying a message similar to the one below.

If you have uploaded photos and are getting this message, here are a few possible reasons:

  • An iPad was used to upload photos.
Currently, Apple has a known bug that strips EXIF data from photos that have been uploaded from an iPhone or iPad. DeerLab, as well as many other photo services, are trying to get Apple to fix this issue in a future release.

  • Photos were previously edited.
If you have saved the photos from another program, EXIF data could have been updated from that program or stripped altogether.

  • Photos came from a website or email.
If you have pulled photos from a third-party website (like Facebook), more than likely, the EXIF data has been deleted.

  • Photos were viewed on a camera other than the original trial camera
Some digital cameras are known for stripping data out of the individual photos, even if just viewing the SD card pulled from the trail camera. While this doesn't happen on all cameras, there is a number that does this.

If you have any questions or need any help with uploading photos to DeerLab, please feel free to contact us. We also have put together some tips for uploading trail camera photos, as well as this short video tutorial on uploading photos to DeerLab.
